LED Light Conversions – a simple guide

Standard

LED Stands for Light Emitting Diode

LEDs are very bright but use very little power. produce little heat, are high impact and vibration resistant. The average LED lasts approximately 100,000 hours or 10 years of continuous use, much longer than conventional light bulbs.

The safety advantages of LEDs over conventional bulbs is that the LED’s illuminate much faster than conventional bulbs. Because LEDs illuminate faster, this may provide greater reaction time for vehicles behind you.

Conversion to LEDs turn signals and taillights may require some additional changes to get everything to work right. This may require the addition of a load resistor and/or the installation of a non-load dependant (electronic) flasher. If you replace either the front or the rear turn signals with LEDs, you will typically need to add a load resistor. By connecting the resistor from each removed stock running light wire to ground, you will place sufficient load back on the system.

The other option is to use an electronic flasher unit. The conventional thermal turn signal unit or flasher is load dependent, it needs a certain amount of current to function properly. Since LEDs draw much less current, your flasher unit may act as if a bulb is out and flash at the faster rate.

Most vehicles have a 2 or 3 wire flasher units that can easily be replaced with a non-load dependent flashers. These electronic flasher/blinker units are commonly available at your local auto parts store. Easy fix!

The conversion to LED units simplifies the bulb replacement issue.

Final notes – For best results, LED lamp output color should be same as lens/ filter color and wedge base bulbs are polarity sensitive. If LED bulb fails to light, remove bulb, turn it around and re-insert it.
